Description
In the valley of the Dłubnia river in Ściborzyce, not far from the spring "Jordan" there is a splendid, three-storey building made of stone and red brick. This is the residence of a famous Kraków family – the Popiel. One of its most prominent representatives, Paweł Popiel, a renowned journalist and a member of the Galician Parliament bought land in Ściborzyce after the January Uprising. He built a huge palace (33 bedrooms) in an eclectic style, where his family lived and where, as a well-known intellectual, he amassed a library full of great works. During World War II, the palace was the center of patriotic activity and the shelter for the underground activists.
In 1945 the palace was taken over by the state and for decades it was used as a common room, labour room and the seat of other institutions. Currently, much ruined, the palace returned to the family of former owners and it is slowly being restored to its former glory.
