History and culture

Lying at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, at the entrance to the Hór Valley, Cserépfalu has been  a place inhabited by people for several thousand years. Although the history of the village can be traced from the beginning of the twelfth century, the first written mention of Cserépfalu appeared in a document dated 1248. That is why the 750th anniversary of the village was celebrated in 1998.

The founder of Cserépfalu was a landowner of South-Slavic origin, a certain Kryspin (Csrepinus). From his name - and not from the Hungarian word cserép (meaning: broken pieces, [vessel] clay, roofing tile) comes the name of the village. At the beginning of the thirteenth century the village belonged to the Bishop of Eger, and from the fourteenth century it was royal property, and more precisely - the property of Queens. The first mention of the local church can be found in the document written in 1332; according to researchers the church dates from before the time of the fourteenth century.

The Medieval Castle Cserép (Cserépvára) also belonged to the Hungarian queens, but in 1443, Władysław of Varna - king of Hungary - gave the castle along with the Hungarian village to his cup-bearer. Since that time it has been owned by various families, for example the Batory family. It is thanks to them that Cserép residents turned to Protestantism in the 1560s. After the fall of Eger in 1596, the castle Cserép surrendered to the Turks without a fight. Yet, only for a short time it belonged to the Ottoman Empire before it was regained by the Hungarians under rule of the Habsburgs. After expelling the Turks at the end of the seventeenth century, the whole of Hungary became part of the Austrian Empire and remained its part until the end of World War I.

Over the next centuries Cserépfalu passed from hand to hand until 1945. After World War II the village picked itself up despite the anti-peasant policy of the Stalinist regime. "Socialist Reorganisation" of agricultural economy led to the sharp decline in the number of inhabitants in the 60’s of the last century. At the same time the local community began to grow old.

However, a few years after the political changes of the late 80's and early 90's, the proportion of young people leaving the country began to decrease. Infrastructure investment was started on a large scale; water and sewage system as well as gas system were built.  Entrepreneurship in Cserépfalu developed, primarily in the tourism sector. Many families became involved in agrotourism. As a result the number of people settling in the village rose. The increase in demand for vacant houses can be explained by popularity of weekend cottages used for recreational purposes. The above mentioned positive changes as well as the membership of Hungary in the European Union can be regarded as a guarantee of long-term existence of Cserépfalu.
