Description

The village appears for the first time in the register of the tithes of 1333, but it is believed that the first Catholic Church in Crăciunel (the present Arian church) is older. During the Reformation, all the inhabitants of the village converted to Aryanism, and the church was converted accordingly. In the early 18th century, an Arian of Crăciunel guilty of murder escaped to Rome, where he converted to Catholicism. Later he returned to his homeland and built the Catholic chapel as a vote. Since 1739, the Catholic priests of the mostly Arian village are Jesuits of Shékelyudvarhely (Odorheiu Secuiesc), since 1742 the village has always had
a parish priest. The parish church was built in 1779. Its construction was partly paid for by the Arians as penance for their attack on the Catholic procession in 1768.

Both the chancel and the nave are decorated with rich rococo stucco. The central motif of the central nave, surrounded by rays, includes the date 1785written in a mirror-script. The frame of the chancel bears the monogram of Christ, the rest of the surface is covered with lush rococo plaster motifs. The colors with which they were subsequently painted, are completely alien to the 18th century customs. The plaster motifs were most probably white and they were only dominated by the chiaroscuro of plastic forms.
In the church, vicarage and outbuildings, valuable paintings as well as other works of art have survived until today.
On both sides of the re-positioned main altar of the Visitation sculptures are missing. An earlier altar picture can be found on the north wall of the chancel. It shows the Madonna and Child in the company of angels. The Poor quality of the repainting is an illusion, as it only partially preserved the original contours of the image. The original was the culmination of the main altar on the right-hand side. In the middle we see a picture showing St. Margaret of Antioch, painted in a very characteristic 17th century technique.
The altar on the right is particularly noteworthy. It contains a repositioned image of the Trinity, which bears the inscription:

SS. TRINITAS UNUS DEUS MISERERE ANIMABUS DEFUNCTORUM BENEFACTORUM. 1794.

A C Ö

This is one of the earliest and also the most outstanding examples of 17th century altar pieces in Transylvania. Its body comes from the 1646. The Baroque plinths with vine tendrils wrapped around columns, carved ornaments depicting angel heads and fruit bunches as well as the predella decorations are unique in the whole Székelys region. A small altar has a black background covered with ornaments of gold and silver paint. The entire interior of the wooden church - the altar and the image of the Visitation placed near the pulpit, which probably belonged to the equipment of the altar - was repainted several times. Under the white oil paint, bronze dust and spatters of silver, hide the original, dark and rich colors.
In the attic of the church and its outbuildings two sculptures were recently found linden wood sculptures of Saints Nicholas and Augustine. The one metre high figures, clad in plastic drapes and have the characteristic attitudes of the holy bishops, probably come from times before the Reformation, and were part of the equipment of the altar.
